Properties:
Bitter in flavour, cold in
nature, it acts on the lung, stomach, large intestine and
small intestine channels. The bitter and cold properties
clear away heat, detoxicate and eliminate dampness. The
herb has the functions of removing the excessive fire and
noxious heat from the lung and stomach, as well as
removing the damp-heat pathogens in the large intestine.
So all of the syndromes of cough due to lung-heat, swollen
throat due to stomach-fire, diarrhea due to damp-heat and
stranguria can be treated with this herb.
Effects:
Clearing away heat, detoxicating, removing dampness by
diuresis for treating stranguria.
Indications:
1. For suppurative infections caused by
noxious heat, swollen throat and canker sores in the
mouth, it is used in combination with the heat-clearing
and detoxicating herbs, such as honeysuxkle flower,
capejasmine fruit and wild chrysanthemum flower. In cases
of cough due to lung-heat, or acute appendicitis and cough
with purulent sputum, it is used in combination with the
drugs for removing heat from the lung, relieving cough,
resolving boils and draining pus, such as scutellaria
root, mulberry bark, houttuynia and waxgourd kernel.
2. For dysentery caused by
damp-heat, diarrhea with purulent and bloody stool, it is
used in combination with the heat-clearing and
dampness-drying herbs, such as coptis root and
phellodendron bark. In cases of stranguria due to
damp-heat, it is used in combination with the herbs for
diuresis and treating stranguria, such as plantain seed,
pyrrosia leaf and prostrate knotweed.
In addition, it can also be used to
treat snakebite.
Dosage and Administration: 6-15g.
It is commonly used in the forms of pills, powder and
tablets.
