Properties: It is salty and bitter in flavour, and cold in nature. It is tropistic to the liver, kidney channels. Its bitterness is dispersing, saltiness is resolving the hard lumps, and coldness can clear away heat. Its effects are removing heat phlegm and resolving the hard lumps. It is indicated chiefly in scrofula, goiter due to accumulation of phlegm-heat.

Effects: Removing heat-phlegm, resolving hard lumps, and diuretic.

Indications:

1. For treatment of goiter, it can used in combination with Thallus Laminariae, Radix Gentianae, Concha Meretricis seu Cyclinae, and other lumps-resolving drugs; For treatment of subcutaneous nodule and scrofula, it is usually used together with Radix Scrophulariae, Bulbus Fritillariae, Spica Prunellae, Fructus Forsythiae, and other drugs having the effect of resolving lumps, phlegm and scrofula, such as Neixiao Luoli Wan.

2. For treatment of beriberi and edema, it can be used in combination with Semen Arecae, Semen Pruni, Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae, and other diuretic drugs.

Dosage and Administration: 10-15g.

Precautions: It is antagonistic to Radix Glycyrrhizae.
